The BOILER UPGRADE SCHEME (BUS ) is a UK wide initiative that provides FREE capital grants of up to £9,000 to encourage homeowners, landlords and their tenants (with the permission of the property owner ) anywhere in Wales to replace old, inefficient, fossil fuel heating systems with energy efficient alternatives like air-source heat pumps or biomass boilers.
The scheme is available anywhere in Wales. . . and is set to run until April 2028.
[ DO I QUALIFY FOR A BOILER UPGRADE? ]Eligibility: To be eligible, you must own the property (or have written permission from your landlord ), and be replacing a fossil fuel heating system. Biomass boilers are eligible in limited circumstances, primarily for rural properties with no access to mains gas supply. Just ask Dean!
SOME FURTHER CONSIDERATIONS:
Up front costs: Whilst the Boiler Upgrade Scheme provides a capital grant for the necessary hardware, you should still expect some upfront costs for the installation, which will be itemised separately on your free quotation.
Suitability: Unfortunately, not all homes are suitable for heat pumps. Factors such as the size of your property, its insulation levels and existing heating system layout need to be considered.
Installation: Ensure that you use a reputable and qualified installer such as flotech for your heat pump or biomass boiler to guarantee a safe and efficient installation.
Hybrid heating: Please bear in mind that a BUS grant cannot be used for a hybrid heating system. . . a combination of gas boiler and air source heat pump for example.
Suitability for your home: Not all homes are suitable for heat pumps. Factors like the size of your property, its insulation and existing heating system layout need to be considered.

Financial Assistance: The scheme provides a significant upfront grant to help cover the cost of installing heat pumps or, in some cases, biomass boilers.

low cost finance
Where grant funding is unavailable, or doesn't cover the whole cost of adopting energy efficient technologies, then several financing options may also be available.
For example; the ECO4 scheme provides funded energy upgrades, including air source heat pumps, for eligible low-income or vulnerable households.
WARM HOMES PLAN: This initiative offers interest-free loans for renewable tech as a replacement for fossil fuel heating (gas, oil, or LPG ).
GREEN HOMES WALES is a Welsh Government initiative, designed to support eligible homeowners in making energy efficient improvements to their homes, chiefly by installing new energy efficiency measures.
From May 2026, homeowners in Wales are able to access 0% interest loans from £1,000 to as much as £25,000 via the scheme. Managed by the Development Bank of Wales, these loans, designed for energy efficiency upgrades, feature 10-year terms and a 6-month repayment holiday.

PEMBROKESHIRE CARBON REDUCTION GRANTS allow commercial energy users to claim as much as 50% of eligible costs for renewable energy systems(up to a maximum of £17,500 ). . . paid retrospectively.
[ OTHER BUSINESS FUNDING OPTIONS ]GREEN ENERGY FUND: Provided by the Port of Milford Haven, grants of up to £5,000 are available for charities, non-profit and community groups to support sustainability projects.
THE PEMBROKESHIRE GROWTH FUND: Supports capital expenditure for businesses that create or safeguard jobs. Available since April 2025, the PGF is projected to be extended throughout 2026.
