leaks, drips & bursts

go with the flo!

Probably the most common reason for calls to an emergency plumber such as flotech are leaks. . .  from the annoyance of a simple dripping tap or leaking radiator, to potentially catastrophic water damage resulting from a burst pipe or boiler.

[ WHAT TO DO IF A PIPE BURSTS ]

1:  TURN OFF THE MAINS SUPPLY!

The first and most crucial step is to shut off the main water supply to your home to stop the flow of water and prevent further damage.  Locate the main water valve (usually found near the water meter, or where the water line enters your house) and turn it clockwise to close it completely.

Whether the faulty pipe is dripping slightly or fully gushing water, you should always start by turning off the mains water supply.

2:  DRAIN YOUR TAPS

Just because you have isolated the water supply doesn't mean that the flow of water will stop immediately!

A lot of it will remain hanging around in your pipes, putting pressure on the burst.  Opening the taps as soon as you can after turning off the supply to relieve any remaining pressure. . .  this will stop the damaged pipe from getting any worse, or bursting in another spot.

3:  FIND THE BURST

This can be surprisingly tricky!  Unless there is obvious water pooling or watermarks, it can be difficult to know where the loss of pressure is occuring.

"A good tip is to listen for a hissing or rushing sound" advises Dean from flotech. "If you can, isolate the damaged section of the pipe by closing the nearest valves, including the shut-off valves for specific fixtures or appliances."

clogs & blockages

go with the flo!

Blockages and clogs in sinks, handbasins and toilets are more than annoying.  Blocked toilets, for example, can pose obvious and on-going hygiene risks.

Professional plumbers, like flotech, have several mechanical and chemical methods they can employ to clear a blockage, but there are some things you can try yourself, see the self-help tips below.

[ SELF-HELP BLOCKAGE REMOVAL TIPS: ]

Try this home-hack:  Once the water level has fallen a little, pour a cup of baking soda down the drain, followed by a cup of vinegar.  Let the mixture sit for about 30 minutes, then flush the drain with hot water.  This natural and non-toxic solution can help break up the clog and clear the drain without the need for harsh chemicals. . .  or calling in a plumber!

If the clog persists, you may also like to try;

  • Using a sink plunger to dislodge the clog.
  • Using a pipe snake or auger (even a wire coat hanger ) to physically break-up the clog.
  • Only as a last resort should you consider using a chemical drain cleaner. . .  being very careful to follow the manufacturer's instructions for use.

capping off supply

stopping the flo!

'Capping' a gas or water line involves closing off the end of a pipe to prevent further flow or leakage.

This is typically achieved by inserting a cap or plug that fits securely onto the pipe's end, ensuring a tight seal (the specific method and materials used will depend on the type of pipe and its intended use ).

[ WHY CAP A SUPPLY LINE? ]

Temporary or permanent shutdown:  Capping off a line can be done to temporarily stop the supply of gas or water while repairs are being done, or to permanently disconnect a line no longer in use.

Prevent leaks:  Capping a supply line prevents leaks from the disconnected endAfter capping, check for leaks by turning on the water supply and looking for any drips or bubbles..

Gas safety:  Capping off a gas line is a crucial safety measure to prevent gas from escaping and potentially causing a fire or explosion.

Please note that it is illegal to work on gas installations without proper certification so, for both mains and LPG gas lines, capping off must be performed by a qualified Gas Safe Registered engineer.
